Tatsu Collection - Dragons of the East

Through Japanese history, dragons have been an integral part of the life and lore of Japan. This series has been designed to commemorate some of the most well know dragons found in Japanese myth and legend. Paul Chen's Forge and designers have brought to life in this sword series not only a unique idea, but unique swords never before attempted in this genre.

Fuku-Riu - Japanese Dragon of Good Luck - Limited Edition Wakizashi

Little is known of the Fuku-Riu. It is said, however, that if seen good fortune and luck will soon follow the beholder. The dragon is often depicted ascending heaven-ward, a sign of success in some circles. We have depicted this ascension in the Tsuba of the Fuku-Riu. The pearl being held by the dragon is also a sign of good luck and wealth. The design of this tsuba is a first for master sword maker Paul Chen and unique to this collection. The saya design is also unique to the series as it is a black-green blend…green being a color associated in Japanese history with luck. The Fuku-Riu dragon is rare in the literature of Japanese history but still a very important and integral part of the Tatsu Collection and a fitting first for this series.

The blades of each of the Fuku-Riu swords are hand-forged from K120C powder steel. The blade style for the katana is of the style of Unokubi-Zukuri, ½ blood grove with a re-enforced Kissaki. The wakizashi does not have a bo-hi. The saya is a blend of green and black polished lacquer, unique to this line and a first for the forge. High quality ray skin (same) is used on the tsuka of the katana and wakizashi. The tsuba of the katana daisho are crafted in traditional blackened iron with a detailed depiction of the Fuku-Riu dragon holding a smoky agate "pearl". The fuchi and kashira are also of blackened iron. The kashira depicts a dragon claw also holding an agate "pearl", the pearl being set so that it is free to rotate within the claw, yet another first for the forge.

Key Features:

The Raptor series, Paul Chen's new line of cutting katanas, has been designed for the cutting practitioner who does not necessarily have access to mats but who wishes to practice and perfect his cutting technique. The blades are forged in 5160 high-carbon steel and specially heat treated to produce very high resilience and greater tolerance of misdirected cuts than a conventional differentially tempered blade. The edge geometry is configured to facilitate the cutting of both soft and semi-hard materials without chipping, allowing the cutter a wide choice of targets. The Raptor Series presently encompasses three blade styles, all tuned to maximize cutting ability.

The Raptor Shobu-Zukuri (Iris Leaf) blade has an elegant shape and powerful cutting ability. Notable for the absence of a Yokote transition, this blade design became popular during the Nanbokucho era (1336 ~ 1392 AD) and its popularity continued into the Muromachi period.

Key Features:

Hand forged 5160 Shobu-Zukuri Shaped Carbon Steel Blade

Cotton "Battle Wrapped" Tsuka

Specifically Heat Treated To Withstand The Rigors Of Bad Cuts

Great Sword For Beginners Or For Users That Do Not Have Access To Cutting Mats

Excellent Balance And Cutting Ability

Specifications:

Blade Length: 29"

The Raptor Unokubi-Zukuri (Cormorants Neck) blade design is patterned after the shape of the Naginata, the powerful long-handled weapon popular between the 12th and 14th centuries. Notable for the strongly relieved shinogi-ji and diamond-shaped kissaki, the Unokubi-Zukuri provides excellent balance in a strong cutting blade.

Key Features:

Hand forged 5160 Unokubi-Zukuri Shaped Carbon Steel Blade

Cotton "Battle Wrapped" Tsuka

Specifically Heat Treated To Withstand The Rigors Of Bad Cuts

Great Sword For Beginners Or For Users That Do Not Have Access To Cutting Mats

Excellent Balance And Cutting Ability

Specifications:

The Raptor Shinogi-Zukuri blade, which has evolved as the most common Japanese katana blade design, provides both speed and cutting power. Featuring a distinct yokote, such blades were originally produced after the Heian period, around 987 AD.

The blade of the Musashi Katana (KTN1) is specially handmade and forged in the Japanese Nihonto tradition. This forging method mixed with high quality, high carbon Japanese steel makes it one of the most sharpest, strongest and flexible blades. The tsuka (handle) is genuine same' (ray skin) and the Tsuka Ito (handle wrap) is black leather, also available in brown leather. The Menuki, Fuchi and Kashira (sword mounting/fittings) are all handmade with 92.5% silver. The oxidization process will create an antique look. The Habaki is handmade from 92.5% silver. The Tsuba is handmade from 100% brass. The Same' is double pegged.

The Musashi Katana is forged using the Japanese Nihonto method and features a black matt finished saya and leather tsuka ito. The Musashi Japanese Katana can be completely disassembled for full maintenance. This is a Fully Functional Japanese Katana, NOT a replica.

The Japanese swords of the Imperial Series have proven, since their initial introduction almost five years ago, to be quite popular with many of our customers. Still, Cold Steel is aware that there are some people who want a battle ready sword, but hope to find one at a more affordable price. Cold Steel's Warrior Series addresses this problem directly. In their efforts to reduce the costliness of the blades, Cold Steel has omitted the expensive mirror polishing that they used on their Imperial Swords to create a new series of Japanese swords with a more practical finish.

The Warrior Series swords are very handsome in their own right and share the same steel, heat treatment, and sharpness as their more expensive Imperial counterparts. Like the Imperial swords, they have Samé covered, cord wrapped handles and quality fittings. If you’re in the market for a strong, good looking, reasonably priced Japanese sword we know you’ll be happy to own one of these. All come complete with a black lacquered scabbard and a blue/violet cover bag.

Cold Steel's factory has used only traditional materials for its Japanese sword’s fittings. The Tsuba (guard), Fuchi (collar), and Kashira (pommel), are expertly made and finely crafted from black iron. The Habaki (blade collar), is hand made out of polished brass and each hilt is covered in Samé (ray skin) and tightly wrapped in the traditional style with black cord. A beautiful brass Menuki (a small, ornamental sculpture inserted between the ray skin and the cord wrappings on the handle) enhances the sword’s aesthetic appearance and makes for a sword that is as traditional looking as they can possibly make it. All come complete with a black lacquered scabbard and a blue/violet cover bag.

Cold Steel Dragonfly Series O Tanto

Cold Steel Dragonfly Series Tanto

The classic Japanese battle samurai sword in all its incarnations has been celebrated for centuries, not only for its elegant lines and simple beauty, but also for the technique and skill that went into its construction. Most swords offered today are interpretive copies of antiquities from feudal Japan. They were made for warrior's of small stature who seldom rose above five and a half feet. As skillfully designed as these swords are, they may not be perfectly suited for the twenty first century warrior, who benefited from contemporary advances in childhood nutrition and healthcare and grew up to be a substantially taller, stronger, and more athletic version of his historical counterpart.

As a way of compensating for this size disparity, Cold Steel has created the Dragonfly Series samurai swords. These samurai swords feature thicker, wider and heavier blades, which mirror the Imperial Series in respect to heat treatment, polish, quality of furnishings, and attention to detail, but with a few new departures.

Most noticeable are the distinctive teal-green silk cord wrap and black ray skin used on the handles and the black iron furniture that bears the Dragonfly motif. Also, the polished blades are more strongly curved than the Imperial blades and terminate in a long "irse leaf" point for maximum cutting and slashing potential. Additionally, these Japanese swords come with two protective bags. There is a blue cotton travel bag and an intricately decorative display bag that's made from the finest heavy silk metallic brocade.

Specifications:

Blade Length: 15"

Overall Length: 21"

Thickness: 5/16"

Weight: 22.9 oz

Blade Material: 1055 Carbon Steel
